General Erwin Rommel was not only famous among the axis army during World War II, but was also popular among his enemies. His leadership of the panzer division in the North African Campaign established his reputation as one of the best tank commanders of the war, and earned him the nickname, “the Desert Fox”. He has disregarded the order directing German generals to execute Allied commandos caught behind enemy lines.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said “We have a very daring and skilful opponent against us,” “and, may I say across the havoc of war, a great general.”
Implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler, Rommel took his life in 1944 and was given a full military burial. Rommel is still widely respected in the Armor community and celebrated in Germany nowadays.
